Light-induced Weyl semiconductor-to-metal transition mediated by Peierls instability

چکیده
Elemental tellurium is a strongly spin-orbit coupled Peierls-distorted semiconductor whose band structure features topologically protected Weyl nodes. Using time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we show that impulsive optical excitation can be used to transiently control the amplitude of Peierls distortion, realizing mechanism switch between three states: semiconductor, metal and non-Weyl metal. Further, present experimental evidence this inverse-Peierls distortion using time-resolved second harmonic generation measurements. These results provide pathway multifunctional ultrafast devices introduce systems as viable hosts light-induced topological transitions.

Strain induced half-metal to semiconductor transition in GdN.
We investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of GdN as a function of unit cell volume. Based on the first-principles calculations of GdN, we observe that there is a transformation in the conduction properties associated with the volume increase: first from half-metallic to semimetallic, then ultimately to semiconducting. We show that applying stress can alter the carrier conc...
متن کاملScalable light-induced metal to semiconductor conversion of carbon nanotubes.
Coexistence of metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes in as-grown samples sets important limits to their application in high-performance electronics. We present the metal-to-semiconductor conversion of carbon nanotubes for field-effect transistors based on both aligned nanotubes and individual nanotube devices. The conversion process is induced by light irradiation, scalable to wafer-size...
متن کاملUltra-compact silicon photonic devices reconfigured by an optically induced semiconductor-to-metal transition.
Vanadium dioxide (VO(2)) is a promising reconfigurable optical material and has long been a focus of condensed matter research owing to its distinctive semiconductor-to-metal phase transition (SMT), a feature that has stimulated recent development of thermally reconfigurable photonic, plasmonic, and metamaterial structures. Here, we integrate VO(2) onto silicon photonic devices and demonstrate ...
متن کاملStrain-induced metal–semiconductor transition observed in atomic carbon chains
Carbyne, the sp(1)-hybridized phase of carbon, is still a missing link in the family of carbon allotropes. While the bulk phases of carbyne remain elusive, the elementary constituents, that is, linear chains of carbon atoms, have already been observed using the electron microscope. Isolated atomic chains are highly interesting one-dimensional conductors that have stimulated considerable theoret...
متن کاملMetal-insulator transition in VO2: a Peierls-Mott-Hubbard mechanism
The electronic structure of VO2 is studied in the frameworks of local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U to give a quantitative description of the metal-insulator (MI) transition in this system. It is found that, both structural distortion and the local Coulomb interaction, play important roles in the transition. An optical gap, comparable to the experimental value has been obtained in the m...
